MarcEdit Practice Set

  1. Break a MARC record

    1. Open MarcBreaker

    2. Select an input marc file (typically with the extension .mrc, but also provided as .dat or .marc)

    3. Create an output file ending in the .mrk file format

    4. Check the results text box to see how many records were processed

 

 

  1. Open a file in MarcEditor

    1. Select the file which you just created and open it in MarcEditor

      1. File > Open

 

 

  1. Add a 946 field to all of the records

    1. Tools > Add/Delete a Field

    2. Field = 946

Field data = nbl

 

 

  1. Add a call number to all of the records

    1. Tools > Add/Delete a Field

    2. Field = 099

Field data = $aACLS$a(Online)

 

 

  1. Change the public note in the 856 field

    1. Tools > Edit subfield data

    2. Field = 856

Subfield = z

Field data = [leave blank to match all data]

Replace with = An electronic book accessible through the World Wide Web; click for information

  1. Click yes to execute this function

  2. Check the number of records changed

 

 

  1. Save your MARC file

    1. File > Save 

 

  1. Make a MARC file

    1. Open MarcMaker

    2. Browse for your edited MARC text file (*.mrk)

    3. Execute

 

Further Practice within the MarcEditor

  1. Combine two MARC Files using the MarcJoin Function under the Main MarcEdit Window > Tools menu.
    1. Deduplicate the results within the MarcEditor using Tools > Record Dedubplication menu.
  2. Splitting one large file into smaller pieces using the MarcSplit function under the Main MarcEdit Window > Tools menu.
  3. Compile an open .mrk File using the the File > Compile File into MARC commad.
  4. Try all of the following using the Tools menu within the MarcEditor:
    1. Adding/Deleting Fields
    2. Adding/Deleting/Editing Subfields
      1. Using simple regular expressions
    3. Editing the LDR and fixed fields
    4. Changing Indicators
  5. Use the MarcEditor Reports menu to either:
    1. Validate the open MARC file
    2. Obtain a MARC Field Count Report for the open file
