MarcEdit Practice Set

Break a MARC record
-
Open MarcBreaker
-
Select an input marc file (typically with the extension .mrc, but also provided as .dat or .marc)
-
Create an output file ending in the .mrk file format
-
Check the results text box to see how many records were processed

Open a file in MarcEditor
-
Select the file which you just created and open it in MarcEditor
-
File > Open
-
Add a 946 field to all of the records
-
Tools > Add/Delete a Field
-
Field = 946
Field data = nbl

Add a call number to all of the records
-
Tools > Add/Delete a Field

Field = 099
Field data = $aACLS$a(Online)

Change the public note in the 856 field
-
Tools > Edit subfield data

Subfield = z

Replace with = An electronic book accessible through the World Wide Web; click for information

Check the number of records changed

Save your MARC file

Browse for your edited MARC text file (*.mrk)

Further Practice within the MarcEditor
- Combine two MARC Files using the MarcJoin Function under the Main MarcEdit Window > Tools menu.
- Deduplicate the results within the MarcEditor using Tools > Record Dedubplication menu.
- Splitting one large file into smaller pieces using the MarcSplit function under the Main MarcEdit Window > Tools menu.
- Compile an open .mrk File using the the File > Compile File into MARC commad.
- Try all of the following using the Tools menu within the MarcEditor:
- Adding/Deleting Fields
- Adding/Deleting/Editing Subfields
- Using simple regular expressions
- Editing the LDR and fixed fields
- Changing Indicators
- Use the MarcEditor Reports menu to either:
- Validate the open MARC file
- Obtain a MARC Field Count Report for the open file
